College of Future Technology Offering Course

CFT offers a series of courses to cultivate students' comprehensive transferable skills, in order to prepare students for interdisciplinary research and the ever-changing future. Currently, two courses of university-level Cross-disciplinary Core Courses are being offered, namely UCMP 6030 Cross-disciplinary Design Thinking I and UCMP 6050 Project-driven Collaborative Design Thinking.

Cross-disciplinary Design Thinking I

The course UCMP6030 Cross-disciplinary Design Thinking I was last offered in the 2023/24 Fall Term. Therefore, there was no offering in 2023/24 Spring Term and CFT used this term to prepare for the upcoming 2024/25 academic year. The next offering will be in 2024/25 Spring Term with a total course quota of 160 students. Starting from the 2024/25 academic year, the UCMP6030 course will only be open to PhD students.

This course has also invited new instructors to join the teaching team for 2024/25 Spring Term, aiming to bring more innovation and creativity to the teaching. As the course requires hands-on activities to cultivate students' design thinking, it is necessary to prepare the course materials in advance. This semester, the course team referred to the previous usage of UCMP6030 course materials and, based on the expected number of students, completed the procurement of course materials for the 2024/25 Spring Term in advance.

Project-driven Collaborative Design Thinking

Iterated from UCMP6030 Cross-disciplinary Design Thinking I, the newly developed UCMP6050 Project-driven Collaborative Design Thinking is specifically tailored for RBM students. The course curriculum is designed to closely align with the key milestones of the students’ thesis projects, following the project-driven learning pedagogy at RBM. Each module will span a semester, with the entire course spanning 3 consecutive semesters to align with RBM curriculum. This approach not only provides enough opportunity for students to expose to project-driven collaborative learning but also empowers students with practical thinking tools in a group project or thesis project setting during the study period.

The course is scheduled to commence in 2024/25 Fall Term, while CFT faculty members will instruct each session of the course to meet the need of estimated size of 400 of 3^rd cohort RBM students.

Development of Transferable Skills Courses at CFT

In order to further enrich teaching resources for transferable skills，the CFT faculty members are currently developing transferable skills courses to better support students’ project-based learning. We aim to gradually develop and refine new transferable skills courses to create a comprehensive curriculum matrix, offering essential transferable skills training through selective courses or other appropriate educational formats to our students. This aligns with our educational objective of cultivating cross-disciplinary talent and preparing students to address future challenges in academia, industry, and practice.
