Min GAO

Dr. Min GAO is currently Director of the Fok Ying Tung Research Institute in Guangzhou. His research focuses on key Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, including indoor positioning and navigation and indoor mapping engines. He has extensive experience in innovative technology development and commercialization. Technologies and products developed by his team have been deployed across a wide range of real-world settings, including Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Hong Kong, Guangdong Olympic Sports Center, and the Sanxingdui Museum.
Dr. GAO is actively engaged in technology transfer and the incubation of technology start-ups. Since 2021, eight high-tech companies originating from the Fok Ying Tung Research Institute have secured external investment, seven of which have each raised more than RMB 10 million. Together, these companies have raised over RMB 150 million, with a combined valuation approaching RMB 1 billion. Under his leadership, the Institute has also advanced technology commercialization through industry collaboration, providing key technology R&D and technical services to more than 300 companies, including Huawei, Xiaomi, HONOR, and Midea.
Dr. GAO has also played an active role in advancing science and technology collaboration between Guangzhou and Hong Kong. He led the establishment and operation of the Nansha Sub-Center of the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou, extending access to Tianhe-2 supercomputing resources to users in Hong Kong and addressing the lack of local supercomputing infrastructure. Since 2016, more than 200 teams from Hong Kong and Macao have accessed the Guangzhou supercomputing resources through the Nansha Sub-Center, with cumulative usage approaching 300 million core-hours. The Nansha Sub-Center has become a representative example of cross-boundary sharing of large-scale scientific research facilities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.Dr. GAO has been recognized as a Science and Technology Innovation Leading Talent under Guangdong Province’s Pearl River Talent Program, an Innovation Leading Talent of Guangzhou, and an Outstanding Talent of the Nansha Free Trade Zone. As Principal Investigator, he has led research projects under the Ministry of Science and Technology’s Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Science and Technology Cooperation Program and Guangzhou’s Major Industry-University-Research Collaborative Innovation Program. He has also served as a key participant in projects funded under the National Natural Science Foundation of China’s Scientific Instrument Program and the National Science and Technology Major Project.
